The magicians 2 lev grossman7/8/2023 The discovery that Fillory actually exists offers Quentin a chance to redeem himself with Alice and find a purpose for his life as well. “You have to find something to really care about to keep from running totally off the rails.” Her warning seems apt as he indulges in aimless post-grad drinking and partying, eventually betraying Alice with two other Brakebills alums. Brakebills teaches them how to tap into the universe’s flow of energy to cast spells they’re ready to graduate and…then what? “You can do nothing or anything or everything,” cautions Alice, who has become Quentin’s lover. Back in the real world, Quentin and fellow students, like brilliant, crippling shy Alice and debonair, sexually twisted Eliot, were misfits, obsessed with a famous children’s series called Fillory and Further (The Chronicles of Narnia, very lightly disguised). When Quentin manages to find Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy and pass its baffling entrance exam, he finally feels at home somewhere. Grossman ( Codex, 2004, etc.) imagines a sorcery school whose primary lesson seems to be that bending the world to your will isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

North and south novel john jakes7/8/2023 Jakes says that he loves doing the research for his books and that he probably should have been a college professor but didn't have the money for the Ph.D. He is not a screenwriter, and he doesn't become closely involved in the production of these mini-series, saying it is too time-consuming. He says that Heaven and Hell is in the development phase. Jakes discusses his two TV mini-series, North and South and Love and War. He writes about what interests him, in the hopes that it will interest readers, if he makes it interesting enough. When asked how Jakes chooses which stories to write from our history, his response is that this comes to a writer instinctively after 30 or 40 years. It is also a story of brother against brother, and cousin against cousin, that cannot be matched. He states that the Civil War period probably brought about the greatest change in our nation in the bloodiest way, in the shortest period of time, of any event in our history, where the whole country changed direction. He is also a research fellow in the Department of History at the University of South Carolina. John Jakes is a well-known author of historical fiction.

Bone crossed by patricia briggs7/8/2023 "He made you vampire and played with you until he was bored. "That's what you were," she called in a vicious tone that sounded wrong coming out of that grandmotherly face. They fell over with a crash and rolled to the drain in the center of the room. A pile of five-gallon buckets - six or eight of them - was on one corner. Outside of the cages and out of reach was a table stacked with cardboard boxes. It was the boy, James's little experiment." Her lips tightened in frustration, and her eyes lit up like the vampire she had been. "How did Blackwood manage the haunting at Amber's house. "Tell me," I said, trying to put some push behind it, imitating the authority that Adam wore closer than any of his well-tailored shirts. It wasn't the magic the fae used, or the witches, but it was magic. I'd felt it once before, in the bathroom at Amber's house when I'd told the ghost to leave Chad alone. Of course not - if you don't want me to." If you give it as a gift, I can help you." She looked like the sort of woman you'd hire to watch your children, I thought. "I COULD JUST TAKE IT FROM YOU WHILE YOU SLEEP dear," the ghost said.

Books by therese anne fowler7/7/2023 Like its subject, A Well-Behaved Woman draws beauty from paradox: it is both detailed and fast-paced, loving and critical, heart-breaking and hopeful. Like Zelda, Alva hasn’t always been described kindly in historical narratives, and as Fowler puts it in our interview, every word of these descriptions makes a difference: “critical adjectives create and maintain mischaracterizations.”Īs a fellow writer of novels that seek to reframe and center women’s role in history, I was delighted to sit down with Fowler and discuss her latest work. This time Fowler takes on the lesser-known figure of Alva Vanderbilt, who married into one of America’s richest Gilded Age families and took bold actions to steer herself, her family and society forward into a better future. Given the runaway success of Therese Anne Fowler’s novel Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, it’s not surprising that her new novel, A Well-Behaved Woman, has been among the fall’s most highly anticipated historical fiction releases.

Let me in lindqvist7/7/2023 If the book is anything like the movie, I thought when I saw it, this writer is damn good. It has a gritty, realistic feel, despite its supernatural elements, and it uses the horror genre both to deliver gory shocks and to develop sympathetic characters. The movie, adapted from his novel of the same name, impressed me a lot. Let the Old Dreams Die by John Ajvide Lindqvist is a horrifying and chilling short fiction anthology, translated from the Swedish by Ebba Segerberg (available October 1, 2013).īefore I started this collection, John Ajvide Lindqvist was a writer I knew only through acquaintance with the 2008 vampire film Let the Right One In. They are interesting and original, and while this is a fantasy featuring alien beings, she made them realistic and easy to relate to. Written with controlled elegance, Dorothy B. Where is the good life he was promised? Why does he always get a raw deal? Then he hooks up with his old Air Corps buddy Brub, now working for the LAPD, who just happens to be on the trail of the strangler who’s been terrorizing the women of the city for months. His funds are running out and his frustrations are growing. To his mind nothing has come close to matching “that feeling of power and exhilaration and freedom that came with loneness in the sky.” He prowls the foggy city night-bus stops and stretches of darkened beaches and movie houses just emptying out-seeking solitary young women. Los Angeles in the late 1940s is a city of promise and prosperity, but not for former fighter pilot Dix Steele. A classic California noir with a feminist twist, this prescient 1947 novel exposed misogyny in post-World War II American society, making it far ahead of its time. |
